Anti-Rabies Vaccine Schedule in the Philippines: Puppies, Dogs & Cats

Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, but it is fully preventable with vaccination. Here is when your puppy, dog or cat needs the anti-rabies shot, how often, what it costs, and what to do after a bite.

Quick Answer

Give the first anti-rabies vaccine at 12 weeks (3 months) of age, a booster 1 year later, then every year. Many city veterinary offices and barangay drives give it free. Keep the signed vaccine card: you need it for pet registration, boarding, and BAI travel permits.

Puppy rabies shot: when and how

A puppy rabies shot is given from 12 weeks old. It is a separate injection from the 5-in-1 or 6-in-1 core vaccine, and is usually given at the 12-week visit or a week or two after the booster.

Keep your puppy away from stray animals and public areas until the full vaccine series is complete, and bring the vaccine card to every visit.

  • Have your pet regularly vaccinated against rabies and keep proof of vaccination.
  • Register your pet with your local government unit where required.
  • Keep dogs on a leash or secured in public and clean up after them.
  • Report bites and cooperate with the required observation of the animal.

Rules and fees vary by LGU. Check with your city or municipal veterinary office for local requirements.

What to do after a dog or cat bite

  • Wash the wound right away with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Go to an animal bite treatment center or hospital as soon as possible, even if the animal looks healthy.
  • Ask about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and tetanus protection.
  • Note whether the animal was vaccinated and keep it under observation if it is safe to do so.

This is general information, not medical advice. Seek care from a doctor or bite center immediately.
